Dentists Administering Dermal Fillers

By Cleah Sphan

All over the planet, many cosmetic procedures making use of dermal fillers happen every day. There are strict rules that govern the use of these compounds, and regarding who is qualified to administer the treatments, and the level of training necessary to do so. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons were the only professionals who have traditionally been allowed to administer these treatments until recent changes. These days in certain parts of the United States, dentists are now licensed to administer dermal fillers to patients for a selected number of reasons.

Below, we will be going over some of the guidelines regarding dentists that perform dermal filler treatments.

Some brief information on dermal fillers.

A natural component in human skin is hyaluronic acid, and this is what dermal fillers are mainly comprised of. Hyaluronic acid is less present in our skin as the years go by, and this is a major cause of wrinkles and lines on our faces. Dermal fillers are extremely helpful in restoring normal skin appearance by getting rid of these lines and wrinkles. Lips can be injected also, to make them appear fuller.

Dermal fillers and Dentists

The debate about dermal fillers being administered by dentists is ongoing at this time. The argument against them doing so discusses their insufficient knowledge of the facial anatomy given that their training is primarily concerning the oral cavity. During dentistry training, the facial muscles are studied in great detail, so dentists will argue that they are more than qualified in the anatomy of the face.

Prescription and administration of dermal fillers by dentists has now been approved by the California dental board. The recent changes are being praised by dentists, because according to them, they can deliver these treatments with the necessary training they have. The board does have some limitations about which conditions a dentist can administer this treatment for, and therapeutic reasons is the exception where permission is granted. Before being certified, the essential training in the process must be undertaken.

Depending on which state is involved, the rules may vary. Dentists in Georgia are allowed to inject dermal fillers after a 21 hour training course, as dictated by the Georgia Dental Association, and only for dental reasons.

Limitations involved

Dermal filler injections appear to be more and more accepted in states in the United States according to a dental board review, but it is limited to being used only for therapeutic dental related issues. The injection of dermal fillers for cosmetic reasons or for non-dental related problems is considered unprofessional conduct and may even be illegal. Dentists are obligated to look at the rules in their own state and the board governing it, to find out if they are eligible to get the necessary training needed to deliver these treatments.

Summary

Dentistry has advanced significantly over the years and so has cosmetic surgery. The injection of dermal fillers is permitted nowadays for issues that are involved directly in dentistry, but for cosmetic reasons, dentists are extremely limited in what they are allowed to do. Dental boards may in fact allow dentists in time to treat patients using dermal filler injections for cosmetic reasons, but dentists must refer to the stipulations set up by the boards in their state of origin at this time for guidance on this.
